Leading Edge Technology
Things have really changed over the years in orthodontics. Advances have made orthodontic treatment not only more efficient, but much more comfortable. Treatment times have decreased substantially and discomfort is a fraction of what was experienced in the past. Dr. Spence has always prided himself in the evaluation and utilization of new technologies. We have had outstanding results with Damon System brackets combined with superelastic wires. For more on the Damon System go to www.damonbraces.com Other new technologies include Invisalign and temporary anchorage devices.

Treatment Philosophy
Removal of Permanent Teeth
This has been a debated topic since the beginning of orthodontics. Some orthodontists believe that teeth should never be taken out while others believe that removal of teeth is required in the majority of cases. Some orthodontists believe that expansion or widening of the jaws can provide the required space to straighten crooked teeth, and often use this method to avoid unneeded extractions.

In our practice, each patient is examined individually taking into consideration the age of the patient, severity of the problem and desired facial features. We carefully weigh extraction vs. non-extraction and consider the possibility of expansion to benefit the patient. All appropriate options will be reviewed to point out the benefits and disadvantages of each treatment method. We strive to maintain a balanced and harmonious facial appearance with a functional bite, in addition to providing a long- lasting beautiful smile.

Early Orthodontic Treatment
Early orthodontic treatment (also called phase I treatment) is treatment conducted while there is a combination of baby and permanent teeth present in the mouth. Although a large amount of early treatment is performed in the United States, there are questions to the efficiency of some early treatment. A good deal of research exists which shows that many problems are more efficiently treated when all the permanent teeth have erupted, and there often is no difference in the final result of two-phase vs. one-phase treatment. If there is no difference then two phases are probably not worth the extra time a child is in appliances or the extra expense involved.

We prefer to utilize early orthodontic treatment only when one or more of the following can be accomplished.

  1. Correction of traumatic situation or potential traumatic situation. Sometimes teeth are in a position where they may chip or abrade against opposing teeth. Teeth may protrude to a point where they are at risk of fracture from even a minor blow to the face.
  2. Correction of narrow palates and cross bites with early palatal expansion. This procedure provides more space for permanent teeth to erupt as well as correction of cross bites.
  3. Growth Modification.
There are some problems where early treatment has been shown to be advantageous and can give better results than a single-phase treatment later. One example is an underbite. An early phase of treatment can sometimes mean the difference between a correction that can be accomplished with orthodontics alone or a correction that can later only be accomplished with orthodontics combined with orthognathic surgery.
  4. Improvement of a child’s self image.
Some children are bothered by the alignment of the anterior permanent teeth when they first erupt. They may experience teasing by their peer group. Aligning these anterior teeth can give a boost to a child’s self esteem during these important years. This is a judgement left to the parents’ discretion. In some cases children are not bothered by poor alignment of teeth. If this is the case and trauma is not an issue, it may be best to wait for the permanent teeth. This can keep expenses to a minimum and will not change the end result.

Treatment Time
Treatment times vary on a case-by-case basis, but most treatments fall into an 18 to 24 month range. Actual treatment time can be affected by rate of growth and severity of the original problem. At Innovative Orthodontics we strive to keep the treatment time as short as possible while giving you the best possible result by using the latest technologies available.
